Recanes are a cheaper than new reeds. The staple (the metal and cork tube onto which the cane is tied) lasts much longer than the life-span of one reed.

When the old cane and binding is stripped off, the staple refurbished, and a new cane is tied on, the resulting reed (or “recane”) plays like a new reed and lasts just as long.

Staples can be re-used perhaps 4 or 5 times on average before they become too worn to be useful.
