In Handel’s time pitch could vary between A=420 and A=430, much lower than today.

As the years went by, musicians wanted more brilliance and brightness in their sound, and playing at higher pitches helped with this (along with improvements in instrument design).

In the mid 20th century pitch was standardised at A=440, although even now there are countries where the usual pitch is even higher than this.
